There is lots to learn from people who’ve created successful businesses. Some of them have learned lessons through failures, then success. Some have built businesses from nothing, while others may have had a head start from family-run efforts. Whatever the case, their insights offer good lessons about customer service for the future.
Pioneering retailers Harry Gordon Selfridge, John Wanamaker and Marshall Field followed many different paths to success, but all of them believed in customer service. For starters, Marshall probably coined the phrase, “The customer is always right.” Whoever said it, all three of them believed that customers should feel good about their experience.
These three retailers also emphasized that the customer should always be made to feel as though they are always getting what they want when they want it. They focused on how much good will could do for a business.
Of course, they’re not the only quotes by well-known business people. Bill Gates of Microsoft fame advocates learning from unhappy customers, too. Jeff Bezos of Amazon likens customers to party guests. Steve Jobs, deceased head of Apple, felt that knowing customers—knowing what they wanted before they even wanted it—was key to success.
